Since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the world has known of the horrors of the nuclear threat. The massive stockpile of nuclear weapons that has risen since - to the point that the planet could be blown up thousands of times over - compounds people’s fear of nuclear devastation, and shows the absurdity and destructiveness that those in power have yielded on our living planet. URANIUM MINING
Australia faces an unprecedented increase in uranium mining. Uranium prices have increased by some 300% over the last six months. BHP Billiton is planning to triple the size of Roxby uranium mine. The nuclear industry is promotion nuclear power as the answer to climate change. With Australia having one third of the worlds uranium the pressure is on to open up to 28 new mines. MORE
WASTE
An existing nuclear reactor at Lucas Heights, south of the Sydney CBD and built to manufacture plutonium for an Australian nuclear weapons program in the 1950's will, if common sense does not prevail, be replaced by a larger reactor currently under construction (in what is now a residential suburb and on a fault line). Falsely claimed to be necessary for nuclear medicine, it will generate both low and high level nuclear waste for at least 40 years. MORE

Thousands of nuclear weapons still exist. Many are on hair trigger alert and could be launched in an instant. Despite the end of the cold war the threat of nuclear war is still real and alarming.

I would like to appeal to all the leaders of the nuclear powers who literally have the future of the world in there hands, to the scientists and the technicians who continue to create these awesome weapons of destruction, and to all the people at large who are in a position to influence their leaders, I appeal to them to work at dismantling and destroying all nuclear weapons. We know that in the event of a nuclear war there will be no victors. Because there will be no survivors".

DEPLETED URANIUM
Since the development of the first nuclear power generators, which utilised the ‘peaceful atom’ in the 1950s, stockpiles of the radioactive waste known as Depleted Uranium have been growing. MORE
STAR WARS
The United States of America has created a new federal agency called the US Space Command to institute a Nuclear Missile Shield Defence System dubbed Star Wars. The Star Wars program involves two main elements, the Hydrogen Nuclear Missiles in space, and the ground defence system. MORE

On Saturday 20 January, 2001 an article appeared in The Age about the visit of a US warship at Station Pier in Port Phillip Bay. The government claims that Victoria can still be Nuclear Free whilst have these warships visit us. MORE
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY
There are real low-carbon options to generating electricity, including baseload capacity, rather than nuclear power.
Demand growth has to be aligned to sustainable energy solutions.
Federal and State Governments are putting their money on unproven technologies that will not be commercially available for decades, if ever: the capture and underground burial of carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power stations and a new generation of nuclear power stations that only exists on paper. Meanwhile, governments are neglecting genuine sustainable energy solutions, which are ready now.
